About the Project
Public Call for Mural Art
Total Project Budget:
$25,000
Budget Description:
One artist will be selected to paint a mural on the exterior of the building at 331 Broadway. The selected artist will be awarded $25,000 in two payments as a fee. The $25,000 stipend includes artist remuneration, design, materials, painting, installation, and community feedback sessions and workshops. This project is funded by a grant from The National Endowment for the Arts.
Project Details:
ArtsQuest recently received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to facilitate a mural on the SouthSide of Bethlehem in an area that is designated as a “food desert” . “A food desert is an area that has limited access to affordable and nutritious food. In contrast, an area with greater access to supermarkets and vegetable shops with fresh foods may be called a food oasis.” (Wikipedia)
Scope of Work:
Artists will first submit existing art pieces for review and if selected as a finalist, will create an original art design and will reference the following parameters:
- Artist should reside in the Lehigh Valley (classified as residing in the counties of Northampton or Lehigh or the cities of Allentown, Bethlehem, or Easton, PA)
- Ideally would contain reference to the SouthSide Bethlehem community but is not necessary.
- Encompasses the importance of healthy eating and access to fresh food.
- Encourages a feeling of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

Members of the Broadway Mural Committee will make the selection. The Committee includes representatives from ArtsQuest, The SouthSide Arts District, the Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission, Lehigh University Arts Gallery, as well as local artists.
